East Hanover Woman Killed in Fire Was Featured in Redbook

Kim DeOliveira complained about her handyman husband not completing renovations at their home in 2008 article.

The 53-year-old East Hanover woman who was killed in a mysterious backyard fire early Monday was featured in a Redbook magazine article in 2008 titled “Renovating Our Home Is Demolishing Our Marriage!”

Kim DeOliveira was found dead early Monday morning from injuries sustained in a fire in a wooded area across the street from her home on Phyldan Road.

In a March 2008 Redbook article, which has been removed from the magazine's website, DeOliveira complained that her handyman husband, Fred, worked long hours but neglected their own home, which she said was in desperate need of a renovation.

DeOliveira lived with her husband at 44 Phyldan Road. The fire, however, occurred directly across the street near 39 Phyldan Road where Steve Pezzino lives.

Pezzino said he saw several small fires in the woods behind his property at about 3 a.m. Monday, according to the Daily Record. After firefighters extinguished the blaze, Pezzino said he encountered Fred DeOliveira, who was looking for his wife at about 5 a.m., the article said.

Anyone with information about the fire can contact the East Hanover Police at 973-887-0432 or the Morris County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Unit at 973-285-6200.
