'Butt-Dialing' Pot User Accidentally Calls Cops

Florham Park Police said they heard the caller discussing the use of marijuana.

Florham Park Police arrested Andrew Macfarlane, 22, of Florham Park with possession of less than 50 grams of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia after Macfarlane pocket-dialed the police on himself.

Police received a 9-1-1 call at about 10:30 p.m. July 5 from a cellular phone located in the area of 13 Forest Drive, according to Capt. Robert Treiber of the Florham Park Police Department.

Police said they heard the caller discuss the use of marijuana, and Patrolmen Brian Mensing and Kevin Langereis responded to the home. There they heard the resident, Macfarlane, say, "the cops are here" and observed him picking items up off a table in the center of the room and quickly walking towards the rear of the house, Treiber said.

The officers continued to knock until Macfarlane came to the door and allowed the officers to enter the residence. Once in the residence officers observed suspected marijuana residue on the table Macfarlane had just cleared, according to Treiber.

When the officers told Macfarlane why they were at his home, he said his friend had "butt dialed" 9-1-1 by accident, Treiber said.

Mensing's subsequent investigation revealed that the items removed from the table were:

  • one small clear zip lock bag containing suspected marijuana;
  • one marijuana grinder;
  • one pipe commonly used to inhale marijuana.

Macfarlane was transported to police headquarters and was processed before being charged. He was released with a pending future court date, Treiber said.
