Four common medical procedures cost nearly the same in Morris and Somerset counties, but lower than the state average costs, according to data from New Choice Health, a private company that encourages people to become smarter health care consumers.
Patch worked with New Choice Health to examine the cost of CT scans, colonoscopies, MRIs and mammograms in Patch communities across the country and found wide disparities in some cases. The examination revealed that in some locations, costs can vary by thousands of dollars even within the same community.
The prices from New Choice Health reflect the “list price” for these procedures – kind of like the sticker price on a car. Health insurance companies often end up getting different discounts and reimbursements depending the arrangements they have worked out with providers.
CT scans, colonscopies and MRIs cost about the same in both counties, with MRI exams costing slightly more in Somerset County, according to the data.
Medical procedures in both counties are lower than the state average costs for all four types of exams. The largest difference is in the cost of colonoscopy procedures, which average $2,330 in Morris and Somerset Counties and $3,970 throughout the state, a difference of $1,640.
