A 70-year-old Florham Park woman died in a one-car accident on Brooklake Road in Florham Park on Wednesday morning after the vehicle she was driving went off the road and struck a utility pole near Beechwood Road, police said.
The driver, identified by police as Mary Mueller, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The accident was reported around 10 a.m. The impact of the crash snapped the utility pole, brought down wires around the vehicle, and resulted in the car catching fire, police said.
Police officers and firefighters extinguished the blaze, and firefighters extricated the driver from the vehicle once the utility company disconnected power to the area, Florham Park Police Capt. Robert Treiber said.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene by the Morris County Medical Examiner's Office, he said.
Florham Park Police, the Morris County Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Unit and the Morris County Prosecutor's Office were investigating the cause of the accident.
The accident resulted in power being lost to sections of Florham Park. Power was expected to be restored Wednesday afternoon. Brooklake was closed between East Madison Avenue and Sherbrooke Drive.
