Woman Hospitalized after Car Crash, Cops Say

The woman damaged a local landscape and shrubs, police say.

East Hanover Police said a Whippany woman was hospitalized at St. Barnabas Hospital after she drove her car off of Ridgedale Avenue.

Patrolman Robert Jordan said he noticed Alicia Grabowski, 23, had difficulty moving with dexterity, slurred her speech, lost her balance, stumbled and nearly fell when he responded to reports of an accident off of Ridgedale Avenue at about 7:40 p.m. Sunday.

Grabowski was charged with driving under the influence of drugs, failure to exhibit a driver's license, unclear license plate, careless driving, obstructed view, driving on a sidewalk, reckless driving, failure to keep right and driving under the influence, according to the police report.

According to Lt. James Snow, alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the accident.

Grabowski told police her steering wheel locked up and the brakes did not work, according to the police report.

In his police report, Jordan said he asked Grabowski if she had been drinking or taken drugs. Grabowski said she had taken a prescribed Xanax earlier in the day, but could not say when.

When police responded to the scene of the accident, Grabowski fumbled with her wallet and was unable to provide it.

Police alerted a homeowner along Ridgedale Avenue that the vehicle caused property damage to the landscape and shrubs.

Jordan called an ambulance to the scene after Grabowski said she was having back pain. The East Hanover First Aid Squad treated her for injuries at the scene of the accident then transported her to St. Barnabas Hospital in Livingston.
